Nikon Unveils NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR Lens for Z Mount

The camera offers exceptional portability and wide-angle to super-telephoto coverage, making it suitable for a wide range of shooting scenarios.

TOKYO: Nikon Corporation (Nikon) is excited to announce the arrival of the NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR, a high-magnification zoom lens that works with mirrorless cameras that use the Nikon Z mount and are compatible with full-frame or FX format cameras.

The NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR is a zoom lens with high magnification that offers the widest focal length coverage among NIKKOR Z lenses, ranging from 28 mm to 400 mm. With a zoom ratio of approximately 14.2x, the highest in its class, it captures the smallest features or expressions on the faces of faraway individuals, resulting in powerful image expression. Users can enjoy taking pictures in a range of scenarios with just one lens, even in scenarios where the distance to the subject is constantly changing, such parades, athletic events, and amusement park attractions. In addition, with the minimum focus distance*2 of 0.2 m at the maximum wide-angle position and 1.2 m at the maximum telephoto position, this lens is also suitable for capturing close-ups and tabletop photos at short distances. With a maximum reproduction ratio of 0.35x, it is possible to capture subjects in a larger size, allowing for delicate depiction, such as with plants. While in the telephoto range, images in which the background bokeh can be expressed by getting closer to subjects. Although it is a super-telephoto with a range up to 400 mm, the compact and lightweight design gives it a weight of only approx. 725 g, the lightest in its class*1, making it easy to carry around not only while traveling, but for everyday use as well. Even though it has a 400 mm focal length, this super-telephoto lens is lightweight and compact, weighing only approximately 725 g—the lightest in its class*1. This makes it convenient to carry around for both daily use and travel.

Further features of the NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR include a vibration-reduction function that performs like a 5.0-stop*3 shutter speed increase, making it highly useful for hand-held shooting, and a stepping motor (STM) that facilitates fast autofocus drive, allowing speedy focus on moving subjects. Moreover, linear MF operation*4 is supported by the NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR to help with subject focus during video recording.

As it meets user needs and advances image culture, Nikon will keep searching for new ways to enhance optical performance and hopefully open up new avenues for creative expression in photography.

Key Features:

  • Covers the widest variety of focal lengths among NIKKOR Z lenses, ranging from 28 mm to 400 mm.

  • Reaches a zoom ratio of around 14.2x, which is the highest in its class.

  • Users can approach their subjects closer for dynamic expression thanks to a maximum reproduction ratio of 0.35x and a minimum focus distance of 0.2 m at the maximum wide-angle position.

  • With a total length of about 141.5 mm and the least weight of its class—approximately 725 g—this small, light lens is convenient to carry and less cumbersome while hand-held shooting.

  • Blurring in low light and when shooting handheld is effectively reduced by stable VR performance equal to a 5.0-stop increase in shutter speed.

  • Combining in-camera VR with lens VR, Synchro VR can be enabled with a compatible camera to deliver up to 5.5-stop stabilization.

  • A stepping motor (STM) can be used to achieve high-speed AF driving.

  • Stable exposure for video recording is taken into account in the design, and features like focus-breathing suppression effectively lessen movement of the angle of vision while focusing.

  • Smooth focusing is made possible by support for linear MF drive.
includes a small, square lens hood with excellent performance and usability that reduces ghosting and allows zooming even when the hood is attached backwards.

  • Designed to be resistant to dust and drips, and to prevent dust and water droplets from entering the lens, it has extensive sealing on a number of areas, including the moveable sections of the lens barrel.
